Same sum insured. More affordable by design.

A new alteration option is coming soon for your existing clients: The TPD Support Option.

Mum kissing child

For conditions like mental health, fatigue and functional illnesses, recovery can be unpredictable. And today, more than 30% of TPD claims are for mental health conditions1. Our TPD Support Option (TSO) was made for those moments.

Since launching in December 2025, we know TSO has resonated with advisers and their clients—and it’s being extended to eligible inforce Accelerated Protection and Protection Plans policies over the next few months.

With cost-of-living front of mind at the moment, TSO can help your clients keep their cover in place, with the same sum insured and premiums up to 30% lower than TAL’s standard TPD2.

When TSO will be available as an alteration option

From your client’s next policy anniversary, TSO can be added to their existing policy for Accelerated Protection:

  • From 1 August 2026 for policies issued under PDS dated 5 August 2022 or earlier.
  • From 1 December 2026 for policies under PDS dated 8 September 2023 and 12 December 2024.

And for Protection Plans:

  • From 1 October 2026 for policies issued under PDS dated 28 April 2006 and after.

What happens next

Eligible clients3 will receive a Significant Event Notice (SEN) 45 days before their policy anniversary, except for:

  • Accelerated Protection clients with policies issued under a PDS dated 5 August 2022 or earlier with anniversaries in June, July, August and September 2026. They’ll receive their SEN by 18 August 2026.
  • Protection Plans clients with anniversaries in July, August, September and October 2026. They’ll receive their SEN by 15 September 2026.

You can view the SEN letters in the Inforce Management dashboard once they’re sent or preview the Accelerated Protection SEN.

Use the TAL Adviser Centre (TAC) for TSO alterations and insights

For quotes:

Quote and compare TSO and standard TPD premiums with the real-time alterations tool. That will be available for customers with anniversaries from 1 August 2026 for Accelerated Protection and 1 October 2026 for Protection Plans.

You will be able to create an alteration quote 30 days prior to policy anniversary for Accelerated Protection and 45 days prior to policy anniversary for Protection Plans.

How TSO works

The very first of its kind in the Australian Retail market, TSO supports recovery where it’s possible, while maintaining long-term security for those who remain permanently unable to work. It offers targeted support when tomorrow’s uncertain and, for everything else, your client’s cover remains just the same.

Frequently asked questions about TSO

How can my clients get a quote and apply for TSO?

Your clients can request an existing business quote through you (via the TAC) or call us directly on 1300 209 088 to request a quote. Later this year, eligible customers will also be able to request a quote online; we’ll let you know when that functionality is available.

For Accelerated Protection applications, please complete the Application to add TPD Support Option (TSO) on the TAC, which will be available from 1 August 2026.

For Protection Plans applications, the application form for TSO will be available in TAC from 1 October 2026.

What’s the eligibility criteria for TSO?

For Accelerated Protection clients, the following eligibility criteria apply:

  • No Double TPD Option on the policy
  • No notified, active or eligible TPD claim exists
  • Customer has received their Significant Event Notice (SEN)

For Superlink policies, TSO must be applied to both policies (Ordinary and Super).

Can TSO be removed from my client’s policy if they change their mind?

Removing TSO requires underwriting and it’s not guaranteed. Your client may not be able to regain their original TPD cover.

Please note, if your client requests to add TSO directly through us and you then subsequently wish to cancel that request, please contact your BDM to discuss. Like all alterations, if your client makes any changes to their policy, a confirmation letter will be made available via their policy record in Inforce Management.

1. Based on TAL claims data FY24/25.

2. Any premium savings vary with individual circumstances, including age, occupation, TPD definition and premium type. The 30% saving is based on premium rates applicable to the first policy anniversary occurring when the TPD Support Option (TSO) first becomes available for eligible existing policies mentioned in this email and compares the first year's premium with TSO selected against the same cover without TSO, for a 40-year-old accountant with Own Occupation definition, on Variable Age-Stepped/Stepped premium with no underwriting loadings. Figures are illustrative and relate to the first year’s TSO premium for the premium rate mentioned above. Any savings may be less for customers of different ages and other occupation categories. Any savings are less for Any Occupation definition and for a different premium type. Create a quote to see the premium for each client. Any premium saving with TSO selected is not guaranteed for future premiums and the differential between the premium with and without TSO can change over time. Premium rates are not guaranteed and can change, which can impact premiums with and without TSO. The terms of TPD with and without TSO differ. For more information, please refer to the client's original PDS and the TPD Support Option Terms and Conditions, which will be available in the client's SEN.
